Shipyard Labs Announces Escape From Berkeley

This October, NASA scientists and junkyard fabricators once again square off in the perennial battle of engineering prowess and creative excess – this time with bragging rights for saving-the-world somewhat hanging in the balance. DARPA had Grand Challenge, the rednecks a Cannonball Run, the truckers a Convoy, and the hippies a bunch of WVO buses broken down on the side of the road.  Now the collected geek tribes propose to start their “engines” on something other than a petroleum based fuel, and cause their varied schemes for land based transport to escape from Berkeley, and somehow, by some means, show up in Las Vegas three days later, using only fuels/power/motive force scavenged “for free” along the route.

Hi – just wanted to say good design and blog – cu

  • Jesse McKinley reported the start of the race from Berkeley. Jesse’s report was printed on page A12 of Monday’s New York Times. I want to know which vehicles/teams made it over the Tioga Pass and all the way to Las Vegas. Why don’t we have real time Twitter reporting on this event?
We’re planning a party here in Washington, D.C., on Jan. 19, 2009, on the eve of the Inauguration of our next U.S. President. How about driving from Shipyard Labs aaaaaalllll the way to the Atlantic Coast and joining us on the Mall? You’ll be welcome!
Congratulations on capturing my imagination. Act boldly and learn from your mistakes. As a wise woman once observed: Never doubt that a small group of dedicated individuals can change the world. Indeed, it’s the only way it’s ever been done. Didn’t Margaret Mead live in Berkeley, too?

There was real time reporting from Danger_Ranger, sorry should have posted that on the site. The two vehicles that crossed the line were the Green Team from Alabama and The Prisoners of Petroleum from Cave Junction Oregon.

Thank you for taking the time to check out what we are doing over here to stir the imagination and get people really thinking about energy.

    Cheers,
    Jess
