Vehicle Name: 44 MPH
Location: Berkeley, CA
Vehicle Platform: 1986 Honda Accord
Type of Fuel Used: Any solid carbonaceous matter found along side the road.
Description: The “44MPH” entry is using a downdraft gasifier to convert solid, dry organic matter into a hydrogen rich flammable gas. Gasification is a thermal process that breaks down solid biomass into H2, CO and CH4 in real time, as the gaseous fuel is needed. Fuel will be produced using the standard “Gasifier Experimenters Kit” currently available from ALL Power Labs.
The “byproduct” of this process is charcoal and ash. The intentional introduction of charcoal and ash into the soil is proving to significantly increase plant productivity, as well as sequester carbon in the process. The result is a total carbon negative energy and agricultural cycle. This emerging scenario is called “biochar”. The 44MPH entry will “sequester” carbon in various growing fields along the route, thereby finishing the race with less carbon in atmospheric cycle than when it started.
